A friend, pastor of an evangelical church in Baclaran, Parañaque, Metro Manila, received a comment on his blog from a devotee of the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran. The comment has echoes of the evangelical mindset of big numbers and budgets as indicators of success and God’s blessing. Below is my reply to the comment.

Comment by Sofia:

The Baclaran Phenomenon is, first and foremost, the incredible number of people who come to the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran every Wednesday to make the Perpetual Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. It is estimated that at least 100,000 devotees come on regular Wednesdays, reaching about 120,000 on the First Wednesday of each month. The biggest turnout of the year is on Ash Wednesday. The crowd for that day simply defies estimate.

My reply:

motherperpetualhelpSofia, big numbers is the worst indicator of God’s blessing. Were the Israelites the biggest nation during their time? No, they were almost always outnumbered by pagan nations around them (Deut 7:7). Were the believers in the early church the majority? Of course not!

Jesus himself said,

Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few (Matt 7:13-14).

Just because a person says he/she believes in God or does signs and wonders means that he/she is a true believer. Jesus says there will be multitudes on Judgment Day who think they are Christians because of good works, but they would instead be sent to hell (Matt 7:21-23):

Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?” And then will I declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.”

What matters to Christ is true faith in his true Gospel. Is faith in Mary the true Gospel? God forbid! Is the veneration of “sinless” Mary anywhere mentioned in the Bible? Is Ash Wednesday ceremony commanded anywhere in the Bible? You can search the Bible with a fine-toothed comb for eternity and never find even an iota of this Roman invention.

The Bible says that God alone is our help, not the Mother of Perpetual Help or any other human being or creature:

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psa 46:1)

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psa 124:8).

Moreover, Redemptorists teach that Mary intercedes for believers. But nothing can be further from Biblical truth, which teaches that Christ alone is our Redeemer and Mediator through his death on the cross for sins of his people:

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim 2:5).

Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant (Heb 9:15).

What is the true Gospel? The true Gospel consists of justification by grace ALONE through faith ALONE in Christ ALONE to the glory of God ALONE, all of which can be found in Scripture ALONE. Performing all kinds of ceremonies and good works will never save anyone. If works can save, then all devout Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Iglesia Ni Manalo, Oneness Pentecostals, Word-Faith followers, and even pagans would go to heaven.

All our sacrifices are meaningless without true faith that is accompanied by obedient lives, as Samuel told King Saul after the king usurped Samuel’s priestly responsibility by offering a sacrifice, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams” (1 Sam 15:22).

This means that among all those 120,000 who are idolaters, murderers, sexually immoral, thieves, liars, wife-beaters, drunkards and drug addicts who perform the Ash Wednesday rite without true contrition–repentance and TURNING AWAY from sin–will still go to hell. In this condition, their novenas, vows, Hail Marys, Good Fridays, and all other rites are abominations before a holy God.

  1. HCS, the apostate teachings of the RCC are open knowledge to all Christians. The 16th century Protestant Reformers fought against all of the above false teachings plus the abusive practices of the RCC. Their teachings are available to all who want to learn about the RCC. This is why Luther wrote the 95 Thesis as a start, and why Calvin wrote the Institutes of the Christian Religion. Everyone can also read the Reformed confessions and catechisms online, such as the Belgic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, and the Westminster Confession and Catechisms.

    1. Right…. that’s why the Protestant Church has been tearing itself apart theologically ever since the “reformers” stood up and declared their possessing the truth of God…. guess that whole protection from Satan thing hasnt worked out so well….
It’s also why Luther himself, after declaring Sola Scriptura, later wrote it was his interpretation that was correct and not yours….
Each time you look in the mirror remember you are your god who decides what is truth and not….
The fact is Protestantism has theologically become splinters of multiple cults of personality populated by groups of people who are drawn together because they”like” and “agree with” the pastor’s preaching and teaching…. that is why you go to “your” church, isnt it?
Protestant theology’s thoughts has become so lost in the Smoke of Satan that their “interpretations” not only contradict the teachings of the “reformation fathers”, Church Fathers, the Apostles and disciples who knew Christ, and have so gravely contradicted the biblical translations of even the King James translation, that most Protestants remain silent at the current Protestant theologian “teachings” on homosexuality, gay marriage, death, abortion and a slew of other “social justice” issues….

Why dont you do what the pastor of “No Price Too High” did and go out and read what the Church Fathers, those who met Christ and the Apostles, said and compare what they say to your beloved “reformers”.
I have read the writings of Luther and Calvin, their writings not the writings of modern preachers who want to tell others what these men said.  And I have listened to the testimonies of many former protestants who have returned home to Rome, some were once considered top Protestant Scholars.
Be honest with yourself, the ONLY reason you are anit-RCC is because your heart is in love with the sound of “my will be done” and not “thy will be done”, and your ego’s rage against the thought that God may have decided to work and speak to you through others…
Even his Son had to obey.
And His God’s son said to Peter … “And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.”
Christ gave Peter the keys to BOUND you on earth and in heaven.
And Peter gave those keys to his successor, and Peter BOUND every Christian to his successors by passing those keys.   And those keys have been passed on continuously, in unbroken succession, since that day.
If you can kneel before the Crucifix and look up and tell Christ that you reject His words and decision to give Peter the ability to BOUND you…. because you dont like what He has chosen for His Chruch…. you are gravely in danger of being left outside his gate like the hand maidens who were left wailing outside the wedding hall.
Please do not put your faith in the words of those who want you to follow them.  Take your disbelief and attempt prove how the RCC is wrong… Read the actual RCC Catechism.
      I pray you do so.

      1. It’s not the Reformed doctrines that was the problem. It’s sinful human beings like us that’s the problem from the very beginning. And this is why even from the beginnings of the New Testament church, there was already lots of problems. Was there a problem with the teachings of Jesus, Paul, Peter, John, and the other apostles? No, the problem is sinful man.

      2. HCS, your unfounded tirade against Reformed teachings leave me no choice but to say similar things against the Catholic Church. If the RCC is the true church, why were there Popes who had wives and children? Why were there RCC priests who raped women and pillaged in Latin America and the Philippines? Do you think these were your regenerate popes and priests? Why is there a horrible sex scandal plaguing the RCC today?

And your view of apostolic succession has long been discredited.

  2. Your ignorance is deep and discursive intellect shallow, very common in “common man” Protestant thought.
Re:  Your reply/answer to “Redemptorists teach that Mary intercedes for believers. But nothing can be further from Biblical truth, which teaches that Christ alone is our Redeemer and Mediator through his death on the cross for sins of his people:” is… “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim 2:5).
First of all neither the Redmptorists nor the Catholic Church teach that Mary intercedes directly to God.  Mary intercedes, by way of request, to her son Jesus; again not directly to God.  You have either been poorly educated regarding the Catholic Church’s teachings or you are in league with daemons.
If you can not see such a distinction, you are blind to the Truth.
I pray you assert all your energies toward trying to prove the errors of the Catholic Church’s teachings.  In doing so you will see the depth and fullness of its teachings and come to live more fully in the Truth.

    1. Your ignorance of your Catholic doctrines is typical of Romanists. And even if Mary isn’t directly a Mediator and Redemptor, by your own admission, she shares Mediatorship and Redeemership with Christ. Add to this all the heretical, unbiblical beliefs about Mary, purgatory, justification by faith and works, the vicarship of the Pope, idol worship, etc., and you have a false, apostate church.

      1. Quod Erot Demonstratum.
Re: “by your own admission, she shares Mediatorship and Redeemership with Christ.” – what I posted does not say ANYTHING close to your assertion.  Your response can only indicate a deep ignorance and weak intellect OR a willful act of evil….

          1. The Smoke of Satan has so filled your mind that you are blind and unable to see your denial of the fullness of God’s revelation.
Mark 9:41 – And whosoever shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me; it were better for him that a millstone were hanged around his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
Please reference actual Catholic teachings {i.e. Catechism, encyclicals, official church teachings} and not spew forth opinions when making your claims.  By doing otherwise you are supporting the spread of lies and falsehoods, and are participating in evil.
I pray you continue to try to prove the falsehoods you believe exist by truly learning what you perceive to be apostasy in the Catholic Church and her teachings.

    1. I’m sorry that you were offended.

My post was not directed only to Roman Catholics, but to Protestants today who call themselves evangelicals, to call everyone to true faith and repentance.

I deleted you from my email list, but I hope you continue to read the Holy Bible.

May you and your family have a blessed New Year.

  3. If numbers and excitement are the most important criteria, it seems that these Redemptorist events pale in comparison to the service conducted by the Israelites when they worshiped the golden calf at the foot of Mt. Sinai.

The theological erosion of worship music is even worse when “contemporary” music arrived. These songs were written by mostly Biblically- and theologically-illiterate young men and women, even those in their early teens!

Are You a Frog in the Kettle?

Soon they will realize either that their faith in Christ is being challenged and will therefore seek a true church or, like the frog in the kettle, they may remain as their profession of faith is increasingly confused, weakened, and perhaps even abandoned.
